About the project
Orton Makers was set up in October 2022. It was a social group for adults from the area to meet others and chat in a safe space, and make something that was useful or beautiful. Originally, there were six weekly sessions led by artist Rose Croft.
Participants got to try woodwork, rag rugging and making their own fabric. Each week the sessions grew in popularity and eventually it ran for a further 12 weeks. With the mix of ‘bring your own craft’ and a craft that people could learn, all types of Orton residents joined, of all ages and backgrounds. The group opened up to having new artists or ‘star makers’ leading sessions, where they tried oil painting, jewellery making and doodling.
The group embraced new members and some members found confidence to actually lead the group and creative sessions. After nearly 6 months of Peterborough Presents leading, Orton Makers continues with a core of its members keeping it going.
Orton Makers is still happening today! The group are based at Orton Family Centre in Herlington. It runs every Tuesday (during term time), 12:30 – 2:30pm, and costs £5 (which covers the cost of materials and refreshments). It’s a very accessible group of adults who share skills, stories, laughs, brews and biscuits.
