Sonny Nwachukwu is a Peterborough-based creative whose vision is to create space for extraordinary experimental theatre that challenges perspectives and tells untold stories through different art forms.
As part of the Peterborough Presents Reasonable Adjustment programme, Sonny has been doing a “listening residency” – which basically means he has been having conversations with different d/Deaf, disabled, and neurodivergent (DDN) community members and organisations about what people think is needed in the city.
This Open Chat invites you to come along and have an inclusive, accessible chat about Sonny’s findings so far, and share your views about what is creatively needed in Peterborough for DDN people to take part in arts & creativity.
During the Open Chat, Sonny will ask questions and guide a group conversation. You can join in at any point in a way that works for you. You are welcome to come and listen too.
At the end of his residency, Sonny will firm up his findings into an idea or proposal, which he and Peterborough Presents will seek opportunities and funding to bring to life in 2024.

What to expect
Expect an inclusive conversation where your voice and opinions are respected and listened to. Sonny will lead the conversation with some questions and sharing of his findings so far. The event takes place inside the Reasonable Adjustment Exhibition which is an accessible art exhibition by artist Fae Kilburn and people from across Peterborough. The exhition address is:

The conversation will go at a steady pace and be guided by lead artist Sonny. You are welcome to take breaks and explore the exhibition while the conversation is happening.
BSL interpretation provided. PAs, support workers, and/or friends and family members welcome.
The venue has space for up to 25 people to comfortably take part.
Tea, coffee, squash, and water provided.
Access Info
The exhibition space is on the ground floor and has level access from Long Causeway. The entrance is only accessible from the street, you do not have to enter Queensgate to visit.
– We have road-tested the entrance and know it is accessible for wheelchairs and mobility scooters, but we know each chair model is different! Please get in touch if you would like the measurements of the entrance doorway.
– An accessible, gender neutral toilet is available for guests
– Seating with and without arm rests available
– Assistance dogs are welcome

– There will be friendly staff present at all times
– Masks welcome
– Static lights at all times (no flashing lights)
– You are welcome to bring your own stim toys, ear defender headphones, and any other sensory supports too.
– There is a quiet space available at the back of the exhibition with a sensory box. In the box there are a selection of stim toys and ear defender headphones.

The entrance to the exhibition is behind two large pillars between Costa and Boots.
Parking & Public Transport
There is no parking directly outside the exhibition.
There are Pay & Display parking spaces, including for electric vehicles, along St Peter’s Road.
There are a few disabled blue badge parking spaces opposite the old town hall and in the Car Haven car park.

The venue is a 10 min walk from the bus station. You can either walk through Queensgate or along Westgate Road.

International Day of People with Disabilities: Drop-in Printmaking Workshop with Fae
Sunday 3 December, 12pm – 4pm
To mark International Day of People with Disabilities, Fae will be running a drop-in printmaking workshop. Pop along anytime and spend 15 mins creating your own embossed print to take home with you!
The Magic Touch: Inclusive Magic Show
Monday 11 December, timings TBC
Join JJ and Jonathan for a disabled-led magic show full of surprises, mystery, and, well… magic!
There will be a small group performance in the exhibition space, as well as 1-to-1s for people requiring touch tours.

Join Sonny and other deaf, disabled, and neurodivergent creative people for an open, honest chat about what’s missing in Peterborough for DDN people. Sonny will then turn the conversation into an idea which will be brought to life in 2024.
About Sonny
Writer, director, choreographer and performer based in London.
Sonny Nwachukwu’s work is multi-disciplinary spanning across writing, poetry, dance, theatre and anything that lies beyond. He primarily focuses on the African and Caribbean Diaspora.
Sonny is a storyteller that incorporates dance and literature making his work relevant, unique, vibrant and thought-provoking.
His academic background in Psychology informs much of his work and he is keen to tackle issues seen as taboo or ‘different’.
Sonny received his dance training from authentic West African and dancehall teachers. He has performed with numerous Afrobeats and dancehall artists working across the UK and has performed at venues including Sadler’s Wells and SSE Wembley stadium. In 2019 Sonny was awarded an Unlimited and Spirit of 2012 commission, to create his first full length work entitled Circles, a choreopoem.
